The economic procession marches on
The economy is indeed much more than final demand, however even best measures of GDP still tend to over-weigh the consumer’s significance. Solid arguments for this exists, the strongest of which is that the data coming out of the business chain are extremely reliable and relatively easy to track. Granted, this of course means that a lot of the opinion based on the health of the economy is indirectly based, through this lens. However, it isn’t a bad place to start, so long that it doesn’t also end with it. With that, today’s Commerce Department quarterly profit survey from both the ends of the business chain offers an opportunity to get a better sense of just how the chain is operating and what that could mean for the broader economy.
Quarterly profits for retail and manufacturing were up 17 and 7 percents respectively last quarter.
Overall, both the manufacturing and retail ends of the business chain pulled in some rather impressive profits last quarter. The manufacturing sector managed to grow its bottom line by 7.8 percent in the second quarter of the year while retail profits expanded by a very impressive 17.1 percent over the same period.
